On the optimal design of river fishways

چکیده
A river fishway is a hydraulic structure enabling fish to overcome stream obstructions such as dams in hydroelectric power plants. The main aim of this paper is to present an application of mathematical modeling and optimal control theory to an ecological engineering problem related to preserve and enhance natural stocks of fish migrating between saltwater and freshwater. Particularly, we improve the optimal shape design of a fishway. This problem is formulated within the framework of the optimal control of partial differential equations, approximated by a discrete optimization problem, and solved by using both a gradient method (a Spectral Projected-Gradient algorithm) and a derivative-free method (the Nelder-Mead algorithm). Finally, numerical results are compared and analyzed for a standard real-world situation.

Mismatch between fishway operation and timing of fish movements: a risk for cascading effects in partial migration systems
Habitat fragmentation is a growing problem worldwide. Particularly in river systems, numerous dams and weirs hamper the movement of a wide variety of species. With the aim to preserve connectivity for fish, many barriers in river systems are equipped with fishways (also called fish passages or fish ladders). However, few fishways provide full connectivity. Here we hypothesized that restricted s...

Several nature-like fishway designs have been constructed in the northeastern US, but none of these fishways have been quantitatively evaluated for passage of northeastern diadromous species. This report summarizes data on passage performance from two studies of nature-like fishway designs for passage of river herring in the field (Town Brook, Plymouth, Massachusetts, and East River, Guilford, ...

The purpose behind this research, which is done on the Abshooran river in Kermanshah and in the area between Delgosha bridge and wooden bridge is to develop lively and active urban centers and to elevate the quality functions of the region and the ecological conditions of the river’s border. To reach for this goal, ecological and aesthetic criteria were in use in a way that proposed alternative...
متن کاملHabitat compensation in nature-like fishways
STINA GUSTAFSSON H aitat om pesation in nare-like fshw ys The construction of nature-like fishways has become an increasingly common measure to restore longitudinal connectivity in streams, but these fishways also have the potential to compensate for habitat degradation and loss associated with hydropower. The habitat potential of fishways has largely been overlooked, and therefore the aim of t...
متن کاملDetermining the best location for a nature-like fishway in Gavle River, Sweden
The construction of dams and hydro-power stations are some of the most common anthropogenic changes of watercourses and rivers. While being important to humans and society by providing electricity, these obstructions of watercourses can have severe consequences for the aquatic ecosystems. One consequence is that dams often hinder the important movement of migrating fish species between habitats...
